This list comprises of American/Canadian TV cartoons where characters primarily live in America (most likely the United States). Some characters on this list are American-born, immigrants to America, of mixed ethnicity or race, or are native to America/American territories… All are POC.

Categories include: East Asian/ Southeast Asian/ Indian // Hawaiian/ Native American/ Latinx // Ambiguous POC

If you’re wondering where the black people are in this list, then look no further than this link where I celebrated black representation in cartoons:

(DIS)HONORABLE MENTIONS?

Even though there are cringe-worthy stereotypes all over this list (that POC like myself, nevertheless, looked up to and identified with), these made me throw up the red flags…

  • The Latin Lover is a reappearing stereotype for Latinx characters
  • Latinx characters are the most ambiguous, as creators conveniently neglect their family life or their cultural backgrounds
  • Creators tend to make Chinese & Latinx characters more family-oriented than their fellow characters
  • Creators tend to give Asian American characters ambiguous backgrounds that can just be assumed under the umbrella of “East Asian”
  • The characters in the Avatar series are POC, and the list does not contain them all; I have also reduced the characters (perhaps unjustly so) to the ethnicity/race that correlates most to an ethnicity/race in the real world
  • Native American (and non-Japanese, non-Chinese South-East Asian) characters are the most underrepresented
  • Hawaiian characters are underrepresented but Hawaii is a popular vacation destination for characters
  • If the main character is a POC, it is likely there will be more POC represented
  • The Wise Elder is a reappearing stereotype for Chinese and Native American characters
  • The Popular Pretty Girl is a noteworthy reappearing stereotype (at least 6 characters fit this description) that: antagonizes other girls (or the main protagonist); seduces boys (or just entices the main protagonist); is a cheerleader; and/or appears to be very shallow
